This whole page can be summed up like this...
They can't verify... what they can't verify!
(But no... I'm way too long-winded for that!)
Here's what you're getting ready to learn
The information you put down on your health insurance application will be used against you!
Don't volunteer any information that isn't common knowledge and can't be verified... without your help.
If you use "alternative medical treatment" find out if your Chiropractor, Naturopath, Licensed Massage Therapist, etc., reports your information to ANYONE! If they do, and it can be verified, then you must put it down on your application.
When the health insurance company pulls medical records from your doc, what will those records say about your health?
This should trigger your brain into thinking about every time you've ever been to the doctors office and why you went there.
"What information would my doc put in those medical records"?
What medications are you taking and what are they for?
This will REALLY tell "the rest of the story", as Paul Harvey would say. Uh oh... I just gave away my age huh.
Just by knowing the names of the medications, I can figure out what maybe you don't even know about your health. This could very well determine which health insurance company I'll use.
You wouldn't believe how many people don't know why they're taking a particular medication and what it's supposed to do for them. I run in to it all the time... amazing!
There is a point here... Back to top
Doctors prescribe medicine for the "just in case - prevent it before it happens" scenario all the time. Heck, it may have even happened to you. Even though you don't have the condition for which you are taking the 'scrip, it is now a part of your permanent medical records.
Underwriters will tear this apart and NOT to your benefit.
The health insurance company will very likely "exclude" that condition, you don't even have, from any coverage now and in the future..."just in case".
Doctors choose not to realize the affects this has on you and your health insurance when they casually prescribe medicine.
The Medical Information Bureau (MIB)
Everything your doc knows about you is in your medical records. What is not in your medical records, the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) will tell them.
Don't doubt it for a second.
The MIB is a repository of information compiled from doctors, pharmacies, etc. from wherever you've lived and any medical professional you've seen, who reports to the MIB.
Here is maybe the most important question of all...
What problems do you have that NOBODY knows about, and there is NO WAY for any health insurance company to verify?
Raise your premium Exclude a condition... or Decline your application Remember... The information you put down on your health insurance application will be used against you! Don't volunteer any information that isn't common knowledge, and can't be verified... without your help. If you use "alternative medicine", find out if this professional reports your information to ANYONE! Always have a game plan, and a copy of your application handy, just in case the health insurance company decides to call you to "verify" information. Know what you are NOT going to say, or volunteer, on the phone. It WILL be recorded!
Do you know what I mean?
What do you know about YOU that ONLY you, and maybe your spouse, know regarding any undiagnosed medical condition?
Questions for self...
How about that knee that acts up occasionally? Does anyone know about it? Have you ever had it checked?
Are those migraine headaches still getting to you every now and then? Have they ever been severe enough to go see the doc? Who else knows about them?
Alternative Medicine? Back to top
Do you see an "Alternative Medicine" Professional such as a Chiropractor, Naturopath, etc? if so, do you pay cash, or use your health insurance benefits?
If you kept your "Alternative Medicine" people off of your application, would anyone know? Would anyone be able to find out about them, without your help?
Call those people. See if they report to the MIB, as most Alternative Medical Professionals don't like the "establishment" any more than you or I do.
They are on YOUR side...
They want you to be healthy. They want you to have medical coverage and will do what they can to help you.
That's why they practice "alternative medicine". I've never heard of a Chiropractor, or any other Alternative Professional, who does report to the MIB as long as you are paying CASH, but call just make sure.
The bottom line?
They can't verify... what they can't verify!
What we are talking about here is not volunteering information which isn't already common knowledge.
Be truthful and honest because they will find out if you're not.
Just don't volunteer any information that isn't already common knowledge and can't be verified. The health insurance companies are hoping you will be so honest that you'll be willing to give them information voluntarily... and that will cost you dearly.
The Cost... Back to top
This "cost" to you can take the form of increased premium, exclusion of that "condition", or the rejection of your application... and all because you are an honest person.
That's what the health insurance companies are counting on... your "over" honesty. That's not grammatically correct, but you get the point.
A "volunteer" example...
I have a client who is of Mediterranean decent. She is as healthy as a horse. She runs every day, is 5' 7", and weighs 130 pounds. No medical problems what-so-ever.
Because of her heritage, she was advised by a family member to get tested for a very specific "condition" that runs from that region of the world. She was told it "runs in the family", and was alarmed enough to go get tested. Normal blood tests will NOT show this condition. There is no way to find it without this specific test.
She ended up testing positive for this "condition" and on a scale of 1 - 10, her doc says that she is "less than a 1".
She has never had any effects from this "condition".
Her result?
She no longer qualifies for individual health insurance even though she is as healthy as can be. That information is a part of her medical records forever.
Thank goodness Colorado has a very good high risk pool. She has joined this pool at a very reasonable cost to her. Does your State have a high risk pool?
Another example... Back to top
You went to see your doc because your knee was killing you. The doc told you it was just strained from moving all of that furniture. He gave you a prescription "just in case you need it", and you're on your way.
You decided since you don't like taking medicine, you're not going to fill it. You'll be okay without it... and you are! You took a couple of Advil and done. No more problems.
Your health insurance consequences?
When you are filling out your health insurance application there is a question that asks about "musculoskeletal" (bone & joint) conditions. You answer "no" to this because you've never had any problems.
But wait... remember going to the doc and that 'scrip you never had filled last year?
When that application gets to the underwriter and they pull your medical records? Guess what they're going to find?
You got it.
First, they're going to see that you answered "NO" to the question. Then they're going to find that you went in to have your knee checked. On top of THAT they'll find that unfilled 'scrip.
"What else is this person not telling us?" They'll ask.
Then guess what? Back to top
Congratulations! You've been accepted for coverage, BUT...
"We are going to exclude your knee from coverage or treatment now, or anytime in the future" (possibly both knees).
This information was made readily available to the health insurance company, thanks to your doc. Hey, it's not the docs fault. They have State and Federal regulations they have to follow.
Now you get an idea of how this process really works.
A health insurance company is always looking for a reason to...
